Aims and Scope

Management of Biological Invasions, established in 2010 by Dr. Elias Dana, is an open access, peer-reviewed international journal focusing on applied research in biological invasions in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems from around the world. This journal is devoted to bridging the gap between scientific research and the use of science in decision-making, regulation and management in the area of invasive species introduction and biodiversity conservation.

Managing biological invasions is a crisis science, with Management of Biological Invasions aiming to provide insights to the issues, to document new forms of detection, measurements and analysis, and to document tangible solutions to this problem.

In addition to original research on applied issues, Management of Biological Invasions publishes technical reports on new management technologies of invasive species and also the proceedings of relevant international meetings. As a platform to encourage informed discussion on matters of national and international importance, we publish viewpoint papers that highlight emerging issues, showcase initiatives, and present opinions of leading researchers.

Management of Biological Invasions provides a forum for professionals involved in research and management of invasive alien species (IAS), including a focus on (but not exclusive to) the following:

• Advances in management of aquatic and terrestrial IAS
• Advances in early detection and monitoring of IAS
• Advances in policy and regulations on IAS
• Management frameworks
• Human-mediated pathways and vectors of introductions of aquatic and terrestrial IAS
• Socio-economic and cultural impacts of IAS
• Ballast water research and management
• Biofouling research and management
• Bioaccumulation in IAS
• Early warning and rapid response
• Ecological risk assessment
• Risk perception and behavioural intent
• Control and eradication of IAS (including biological control)
• Indicators for IAS (including biological indication)
• IAS-related information systems and information management
• IAS and biodiversity conservation
• Case studies that highlight biosecurity management in action
• Education and outreach
• Citizen science

Management of Biological Invasions is an official journal of International Association for Open Knowledge on Invasive Alien Species (INVASIVESNET).

Open Access policy

Management of Biological Invasions is an Open Access journal which means that all content is freely available without charge to the user or his/her institution. Users are allowed to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles in this journal without asking prior permission from the publisher or the author. This is in accordance with the BOAI definition of Open Access.
The Open Access (OA) policy of Management of Biological Invasions means that authors retain the copyright of their articles, which can be copied, downloaded and freely distributed within society (please see Copyright statement below). The primary advantage of OA journals is that the entire content is freely available to users everywhere, and this may enhance citation rates of OA papers.
Management of Biological Invasions applies a regular funding model for OA journals, by charging authors for processing of their manuscripts (information on page charges and on applications for support can be found at Author Guidelines web page). Also, the journal is currently seeking additional funding from relevant organizations in order to support students, retired scientists, those from low income countries.
Please see more information on advantages of OA journals and their funding models at Wikipedia and Nordic Open Access Publishing web sites, and in recent publications:

Data Publication policy

Submission of a manuscript to Management of Biological Invasions implies that all scientific information described in the manuscript, including all relevant raw experimental and field data, will be freely available online for any interested data user. We expect users of the data to cite the published paper. Geo-referenced species record information (both for non-native and native species), annotated checklists and biological profiles of non-native species should be deposited in the Regional Euro-Asian Biological Invasions Centre (REABIC) information system (please check standard submission forms in the Manuscript presentation section of the Author Guidelines) or in the other recognized online species record data repository (e.g. GBIF or one of its data sources). Please note that REABIC is a partner organisation and data provider for the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) (REABIC profile at the GBIF web site) and for the European Alien Species Information Network (EASIN). All data deposited to REABIC will be publically available only after release of the relevant publication in Management of Biological Invasions, including relevant publication of species checklists or species occurrences with GBIF. All of these data or selected parts of them can be published in tabular format or as supplementary material as part of the online research paper without any size limit and without page charges. Relevant links and references will be included with deposited data in order to protect authors’ rights on this information and to increase the citability of their publication in Management of Biological Invasions.

Nucleic acid sequences also should be deposited in an appropriate database (i.e. GenBank) in time for the accession number to be included in the published article.

Authors may propose alternative repositories and archives for their data. If so, they should provide permanent open-access as is the case with the above options and should have some added value (e.g. greater quality assurance or and/integration of data in a specialized database).
