Issue 1 Summary by the Editors

The first issue of Aquatic Invasions includes the editorial note, 9 regular research articles, 1 short communication and 1 technical report. The journal concept is outlined in the editorial article (Panov and Gollasch 2006, pp 1-3). The majority of articles in this issue deal with invasive crustaceans, first recorded or established in the European inland and coastal waters: the Ponto-Caspian mysid Hemimysis anomala in UK (Holdich et al. 2006, pp 4-6), the Ponto-Caspian onychopod Evadne anonyx established in the Gulf of Finland (Rodionova and Panov 2006, pp 7-12), the Indo-Pacific crab Charybdis feriata in the Mediterranean Sea (Abelló and Hispano 2006, pp 13-16), the Chinese mitten crab Eriocheir sinensis in Lake Ladoga and the Caspian Sea (Panov 2006, pp 28-31; Robbins et al. 2006, pp 32-34). One of the articles addresses the taxonomy of Eriocheir sinensis (Clark 2006, pp 17-27). Two contributions reported new records of invasive molluscs, i.e. Rapana venosa in the North Sea (Kerckhof et al. 2006, pp 35-37 pages), and Mytilopsis leucophaeata in the northern Baltic Sea (Laine et al. 2006, pp 38-41). The Ponto-Caspian round goby Neogobius melanostomus was first found in the North Sea (2005 in the Netherlands) and the north-eastern Baltic Sea (van Beek 2006, pp 42-43; Ojaveer 2006, pp 44-45). Finally a technical report on a new ballast water sampling device (Gollasch 2006, pp 46-50) concludes the contributions to this inaugural issue.
